Cab To Axle

Independent reporting for the vocational truck trade.

Clean CA starts at the exhaust, not the brochure.

NTEA wants nothing proud of the rails behind the cab. IMT starts the tape at the stack. GM still ships a DEF relocation kit in the cab for 3500HD service-body jobs.

"Clean CA" gets used like it is a checkbox on the dealer order. It is three different measurements, depending on who is talking, and the body does not care which brochure you believed.

Ask thisWho wrote it down
Is anything proud of the rails, or outboard of them, between the cab and the axle?NTEA, April 2025. Clean top of frame, or a drawing of every intrusion.
Where does the exhaust actually end, relative to the back of the cab?IMT. If the stack kicks past the cab, the clean measurement starts there.
Where is the DEF, and is there a published relocation for this exact fuel-tank option?GM bulletin 156d, for the 3500HD single rear tank.

NTEA's OEM Chassis Considerations Guide tells chassis engineers what upfitters want: nothing protruding above or outboard of the frame for the length behind the cab. If the OEM cannot do a clean top of frame, NTEA wants drawings that show every intrusion, so the body company plans the mount instead of discovering it on the floor.

Interstate's rules for IMT Dominator mechanic bodies are the version that costs money. "Clean CA required" means the sides of the frame are clear: air dryer, air tanks, and the DEF tank inside the rails or under the cab. Relocating junk that was hung outboard is an extra charge, and they will not release the body to production without a layout drawing or photos and confirmed measurements.

Then they move the tape. Their sheet says the clean CA includes the exhaust location, and if the exhaust extends behind the cab, that is where the clean measurement starts. A vertical stack next to the passenger door that kicks back past the cab wall is a shorter CA. Front stabilizers and the first set of boxes see it first.

DEF is the other thief. Interstate wants the tank under the cab or immediately behind it. If it pokes past the cab back wall at all, they want that layout before the body ships, because it fights the body and the front outriggers. On a Peterbilt 536/537 or a Kenworth T280/380 they will take a 56-gallon fuel tank. Step up to 75 gallons and they add five inches to the minimum CA.

GM already said the factory DEF location can block a service body. Upfitter Integration Bulletin 156d, revised January 26, 2021, covers 2020-and-newer Silverado and Sierra 3500HD chassis cabs with the L5P diesel and the single rear fuel tank, order code N2L. GM's reason: some customers and upfitters may need to relocate the DEF tank to install a service body. The kit is part 84659197, and on N2L trucks GM says it ships loose in the cab. That bulletin is not a license to move DEF on every GM. Dual-tank trucks, order code N2N, are a different job. Bulletin 171c is the fuel-system path, and the ECM has to be reprogrammed at a GM dealer after you convert N2N to N2L, fuel level indication included.

If the answers to the three questions are a shrug and a window sticker, you do not have a clean CA. You have a chassis that will be clean after you pay to move the factory's problem.
